EU gives €15mn grant to minimize food and plastic waste in Sri Lanka
ECONOMYNEXT – The European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development are helping Sri Lanka launch the three-year CIRCULAR Economy in the Food Sector Programme, to tackle food and plastic waste, with a 15 million euro grant.
“Our 15 million euro grant contribution for CIRCULAR shows the European Union’s commitment to support the Government of Sri Lanka and partners in creating a safe environment for businesses to thrive,” EU Ambassador Carmen Moreno said in a statement.
CIRCULAR, under the EU’s ‘Global Gateway’ program, will support government policies and efforts to identify, promote, and scale up investment opportunities, and find socio-economic and technological solutions that promote circular economy principles.
Sri Lanka faces food loss from production to wholesale and food and single-use plastic waste throughout the supply chain, including in households, the statement from the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives said.
