Tips for reducing pumpkin waste this autumn
We are encouraging residents to make the most of their pumpkins this autumn by using them in recipes or recycling them responsibly, helping to reduce food waste across the district.
To support residents, we are working with Picking Patch in Fordingbridge, where visitors can pick up a flyer with tips for using up and recycling pumpkins. These flyers are also available at our information offices.
Residents can roast their pumpkin and use it in soups, curries, pies, and cakes, with a range of recipes available on the Love Food Hate Waste website. If residents are unable to use their pumpkin in cooking, it can be composted at home in either their compost bin or heap.
Earlier this year, we started rolling out our new waste and recycling collection service in three phases across the district, which includes weekly food waste collections. If residents in Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the new service can’t use up or compost their pumpkin, they can place it in their food waste caddy, making sure to cut it into smaller pieces, and remove decorations, paint, and candles.
Residents in Phase 3 who have not yet received their food waste caddy should place unused pumpkins in their general waste container if composting is not an option.
