Introducing a Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland – government response
Some very good news from the UK today, with the governments and environmental departments of England, Wales and Northern Ireland confirming the details of their deposit systems for drinks packaging.
Anyone who has followed the world of deposit return systems for some time will know there’s been quite a delay in getting this information published. But, now that it’s here, we’ve got that old but familiar feeling again – there’s movement, action and something to get our teeth into!
There are clear, ambitious targets for drinks packaging collection – 70% in year one, 80% in year two and 90% by the third and subsequent years. Plus, there will be penalties if these targets aren’t met – always helpful.
